●These coins come from a tsutsumi (包) — a traditional Edo-period paper package in which gold and silver coins were bundled and sealed in washi (Japanese paper) by their issuers, the Kinza and Ginza mints, or by licensed money changers. Coins preserved within an intact tsutsumi remained sealed away from circulation, which accounts for their exceptional state of preservation.
To verify the quality of this group, we submitted 30 randomly selected pieces to PCGS for grading. The results confirm the remarkable consistency of the hoard: the majority graded MS63 to MS64, with several reaching MS65 and one standout piece certified MS65+.
