Description
| Detail |
●Genbun Koban is a gold coin issued during the Genbun era (1736–1818) under the Tokugawa shogunate, forming part of Japan’s early modern gold currency system. It represents a transitional phase in Edo-period coinage, reflecting monetary adjustments following earlier debasements.
The Genbun Koban is composed of a gold–silver alloy with an approximate fineness of .653 gold, the remainder being primarily silver. Date: ND (circa 1736–1818, Edo period) While produced in relatively large quantities compared to earlier koban, well-preserved examples are increasingly difficult to find, particularly those retaining clear stamps, sharp details, and attractive surface texture. As a result, Genbun Koban remain an important and collectible type within the broader series of Edo-period gold coinage.
