Description
Detail |
●During the Edo period, banks or money exchangers sealed certain amounts of silver or gold coins into large bundles for convenience in high-value transactions. In this case, 160 pieces of 1 Shu silver coins were stacked inside Washi (traditional Japanese paper). Each pile contained 16 pieces, which were wrapped into a single bundle to prevent movement. It's almost a miracle that it has remained in this condition. Usually, once it's opened, the smaller pieces are also taken out! Isn't that fascinating? |
