| detail | ●Ancient Greek and Roman silver tetradrachm coin issued by Macedonia. Large. Rare item, certified as nearly unused. Even though this coin was issued by Ancient Rome, it has a very Greek design. Conquerors would generally issue coins depicting propaganda about themselves or their country. However, on the front, the Greek goddess Artemis and the Macedonian shield are drawn around the edge, and on the back, the club of the great Greek hero Hercules is depicted, surrounded by oak leaves, the sacred tree of Zeus, the supreme god in the same mythology, and lightning bolts (thunderbolts). And the characters "Macedonia, administrative division". It may seem natural that Hercules' club would be used on a coin issued in Macedonia, where the young hero Alexander lived. However, if you consider that it is from ancient Rome, your perspective changes completely. It may be that it contains a strong message that "all of that culture and history is no longer Greek, but belongs to us, the Romans." |
